On the fourth day of the "Travelogue of China" program—an initiative jointly organized by the China Public Diplomacy Association (CPDA) and Global Times Online—an international delegation of journalists visited Ulanqab City in Inner Mongolia, where a new generation of agricultural innovation is transforming the region's high-altitude farming landscape.
Among the standout examples of this transformation was the Chayouqian Banner Cold-Tolerant Vegetable Academician Workstation, established in 2012 as China's first research center focused on cold-tolerant vegetables. The facility showcased a remarkable blend of traditional agricultural knowledge and cutting-edge technology, underscoring China's push for sustainable rural development.
One of the most striking innovations on display was a line of organic, health-safe pesticides that redefine the concept of eco-friendly farming. According to Guan Huiming, the director of the facility and a recipient of the 2024 National Model Individual award for Ethnic Unity and Progress, these pesticides are not only non-toxic but are safe enough to be consumed by humans—an unprecedented development in global agriculture.
"Currently, this is indeed unique to China. As of now, no other pesticide in the world meets this standard. Others may be low-toxicity or eco-friendly, but none are safe for human consumption," said Guan.
"We use intelligent control systems. Sensors detect how much water the plants need, and the computer automatically controls the water valves accordingly. In simple terms, we call this smart water conservation. It's part of a broader smart agriculture framework involving automation and intelligent controls," Guan explained.
