Airlux Technologies:

Beyond the name change: Staying ahead of emerging trends that are influencing indoor growing

Founded by Ronald van de Oudeweetering, the company began life as Air Supplies before rebranding early this year to Airlux Technologies. The name change reflects its dual focus on climate systems ("Air") and lighting ("Lux"), as well as innovation.

"The word 'Technologies' wasn't just a nice add-on," Rob explains. "It signals something we're proud of: that we develop our key innovations in-house. From our ionizer-integrated light fixtures to asymmetrical lens designs, we're constantly engineering smarter, more effective tools for growers."

Smart integration in practice
Airlux's approach starts with a deep understanding of each project's environment and biology. One such example is their collaboration with Growy, a vertical farming company in Amsterdam.

"With Growy, we didn't just supply equipment," Rob shares. "We built a system around their crop and scaling goals."

For this flagship project, Airlux delivered its water-cooled Dimlux Vertiled lighting system with asymmetrical optics to ensure even light distribution, even at the edges of grow layers. A fully integrated air handling system stabilizes temperature, airflow, and humidity across layers, solving one of vertical farming's toughest challenges.

"The result is a compact, stable growing environment that supports high-yield production and strategic scalability. It's the kind of setup that gives growers the confidence to expand."

Moving on to cannabis
Another standout case is Aethogenix, a medicinal cannabis producer in North Macedonia. In this tightly regulated sector, stability and consistency are important.

"Cannabis cultivation demands a high level of precision," Rob notes. "Aethogenix needed climate and lighting that could match pharmaceutical-level standards."

Airlux deployed its Revomax air treatment system alongside Dimlux Xtreme Series MKII LED fixtures, which offer adjustable spectra, UV options, and integrated ionizer technology to support plant health naturally. The entire setup is managed via a centralized interface, providing full control and seamless scalability.

What growers want now
Having worked with a range of farms across Europe, Airlux Technologies has a clear view of the emerging trends that are influencing indoor growing. "Whether you're growing leafy greens or medicinal cannabis, the goals are similar. You need more control, better results, and smarter resource use," Rob says.

Growers are shifting from passive monitoring to active climate steering. "Systems that read data are no longer enough. We're seeing a strong push toward real-time, sensor-driven adjustments in temperature, VPD, and humidity. Climate optimization needs to be data-driven."

In addition to this, lighting strategies are becoming more dynamic. "Static lighting is yesterday's solution. Tunable spectra that adapt to different crop stages or cultivars are now expected, and they're essential for maximizing yields."

Rob elaborates that another major point growers look at is cost efficiency. "In both CAPEX and OPEX, growers are looking for better ROI. That's why we build systems that are not only energy-efficient but also low-maintenance and built to last."

Perhaps the most notable shift is when Airlux is brought into projects. "More and more, farms are involving us right from the design phase. That lets us build modular, steerable systems from the start, and avoids costly retrofits later."

Looking at scalable innovation
The company has its base in the Netherlands and has over 15 years of technical expertise. In early 2024, Airlux Technologies broadened its leadership team with the arrival of Robbert Bakker, former CEO of Knab Bank and Kinly, and Rob Leek, founder of Minder.nl. Together with founder Ronald van de Oudeweetering, the trio brings a balance of technical depth, business acumen, and operational know-how to the table.

"We're entering a new phase," Rob reflects. "The industry is maturing, and so are we. It's not just about delivering products, it's about delivering outcomes that are financially viable and very precise," says Rob Leek, one of Airlux Technologies' newest leadership additions. "Every grower has a different crop, a different layout, and different goals. Our job is to design solutions that fit all three."
