M&S launches Plan A projects to boost UK-grown fruit and veg
Marks & Spencer (M&S) has launched new initiatives under its Plan A sustainability programme, as it aims to increase the availability of British-grown produce and reduce carbon emissions from imported fruits and vegetables. M&S has become the first UK supermarket to offer early-season British Tenderstem broccoli, available now both in-store and via Ocado, three weeks ahead of the usual season start in June. In addition to vegetables, the Plan A programme is turning its focus to soft fruit. M&S is trialling precision pollination technology to enhance the volume and quality of British strawberries, including its own Red Diamond, King and White Pearl varieties.

France: Carrefour has very strong potential as stand-alone company, CEO says
Carrefour, Europe's largest food retailer, does not need a large transformational deal to expand as it has "a very strong potential" as a stand-alone company, its chief executive said. Asked about a recent media report that retailer Ahold Delhaize held preliminary discussions on buying Carrefour in late 2024 before abandoning the idea in January, Alexandre Bompard told shareholders: "I cannot comment on rumors about this kind of matters".

UK: Aldi to open ten new stores this summer
Aldi is set to open ten new stores over the next 14 weeks, while a further 30 stores will undergo a refresh. The UK's fourth-largest supermarket, which now has more than 1,050 stores, will be opening new stores in areas such as Oldbury in the West Midlands, Fulham Broadway in London and Brighouse in West Yorkshire.

Poland: Eurocash Group sees 7% revenue decline in Q1 2025
Eurocash Group saw first quarter revenue dropping 7.6% year-over-year to PLN 6.9bln (€1.6bln), partly due to the later Easter holiday.
