Domenico Raneri, president of the consortium: "Now, we are aiming for the PGI label to grow abroad, too"

The Melon Mundial campaign is nearing completion

The netted melon campaign, which is cultivated in the lands of the Mundial Consortium in Sicily, Italy, along the coastal strip between Licata, Palma di Montechiaro, Ispica, and Pachino, is coming to a close. It has been a favorable year in terms of both quality and sales, as confirmed by the consortium's president, Domenico Raneri.

As in previous years, we started planting in December. Favorable weather conditions contributed to achieving a satisfactory level of production. From an agronomic perspective, no issues stood out. Plant diseases are inevitable, but with proper soil management, adequate greenhouse care, and a focus on aeration, they can be mitigated effectively," Raneri explains. "We didn't see any of the usual production spikes, and we managed to avoid the price drops that affected previous campaigns when production was too high. We have been able to plan with greater precision for a few years now."

Overall, the balance is positive. "We are satisfied with the production level and quality. Even during the final weeks of the campaign, the Brix degree remained high. Prices were satisfactory, similar to last year and higher than two or three years ago. Production volumes have remained the same, but with more stable remuneration," Raneri continues.

Almost all of the product is destined for the Italian market, particularly agri-food centers. Exports remain minimal, primarily due to commercial positioning. "Our melons are high-quality products that require greater investment. Conversely, foreign large-scale, organized distribution enterprises seek cost-effective products that align with their business model."

The PGI label to foster growth
The most significant news regarding exports in 2025 is the official approval of Melone di Licata's designation as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). This designation is crucial for enhancing the product's visibility and identity.

With the PGI, we can more strongly assert the uniqueness of our melon. It could also open doors to large-scale international retail trade. To that end, we have formed a committee dedicated to this goal. If the process is successful, we will be able to expand the production area, which currently encompasses approximately 800 hectares, to include additional municipalities in the province of Agrigento," Raneri concludes.
