Starting December 1, 2025, Royal Berry will acquire the greenhouse horticulture facility in Egchel from Limburg's Wijnen Square Crops. This takeover involves a modern 18-hectare greenhouse operation that currently cultivates cucumbers and peppers.
With this acquisition, Royal Berry, a strawberry grower, will expand its total cultivation area to 75 hectares, marking the next step in its growth strategy. After a brief conversion period, the Egchel location will be fully equipped for strawberry cultivation, emphasizing sustainability and innovation.

Happy with the opportunity for expansion and sustainability
In recent years, Royal Berry has focused on expanding its production while enhancing sustainability and innovation. "With this acquisition, we're adding a location that aligns perfectly with our future vision," says owner Jan van Genderen. "The location's scale and options fit well with our plans for sustainable, future-proof strawberry cultivation. We are incredibly proud and grateful to welcome this remarkable company into our group. This expansion gives us the momentum to further strengthen our market position."
Royal Berry is particularly excited about this opportunity in Limburg. As a member of Coöperatie Kompany, based in Venlo, Limburg, the company already has a strong connection to the region. "Due to our collaboration within the cooperative, expanding to a location in Limburg feels like a logical and valuable step," they remarked. The new site in Egchel will be set up for illuminated cultivation.
Upscaling
This week, it was also announced that Royal Berry is eyeing expansion in the De Kievit greenhouse horticulture area in Grashoek. The specific plans for this location have not yet been disclosed. However, it's clear that entrepreneur Jan van Genderen is openly pursuing his ambitious growth strategy. Earlier this year, at Strawberry Day, he indicated a strong focus on expanding beyond Bemmel. In support of this, Royal Berry purchased land in the former Huissen greenhouse horticulture area Leutensche Leigraaf this spring. While Jan considers this area part of 'Bemmel,' the recent developments in Egchel and Grashoek represent expansions that are genuinely beyond Bemmel.
Wijnen Square Crops, led by Pieter Wijnen, previously sold 32 hectares in Grubbenvorst to Van Gog Kwekerijen. With the sale of the remaining area in Egchel, all holdings in that location will also be sold.
